about

This is a compilation of remixes and original versions of songs from the 400 Lonely Things published catalog. It was curated to accompany and celebrate "Apparitions Untold" - David Irvine's solo painting and sculpture exhibition in July of 2022 at Concave Gallery in Perth, Ontario.

For his exhibit, David is showcasing art he created exclusively while listening to 400 Lonely Things. The artwork used in both the digital and physical edition of this compilation are photos taken by David of works-in-progress from his exhibit.

The timing of David's exhibition is serendipitous as 2022 also marks the 20-year arrival of the name "400 Lonely Things". As such, I had been planning on doing a retrospective compilation this year - that this plan dovetails so thoroughly with what David has done is just exquisite.

This album which shares the "Apparitions Untold" title is the thirteenth album-length release as 400 Lonely Things. It is comprised of one track each from the previous twelve releases. Seven of these twelve tracks were remixed (some pretty drastically) specifically for this compilation.

That David has felt inspired and compelled to do this has thrilled me to no end. I was already a huge admirer of his work and since learning about Apparitions, a steady wind of joy, validation, solidarity, and gratitude has blown through every cell of my being - bringing blinding light to some very dark days here in the U.S.

Aside from the sheer talent on display in David's creations - I'm especially moved by the pieces themselves. His fragile and wounded characters are dreamlike, archetypal, iconic, and identifiable. They are naked little souls, bearing the scars of the world in their weary expressions - unable or unwilling to conceal their vulnerable humanity. Personalized versions of them hide within - or are worn openly - by all of us. It's reflected in his title: "Apparitions Untold". David is telling ghost stories to the ghosts of ourselves. 400 Lonely Things is honored to provide the soundtrack.

An extra special thank you must be extended to Pumpkinrot for inadvertently introducing David Irvine and 400 Lonely Things to each other.
