about

A Mourner's Companion:
Volume One: Minutes A.D.
Volume Two: The Morning People
Volume Three: Deep Hearted
______________________________

A note on the series "A Mourner's Companion" from Craig:

In 2008, I met every evening for a month online with the other half of 400 Lonely Things, Jonathan McCall, talking for hours while transferring recordings back and forth to each other. During this period, Jonathan's father was in hospice and passed away. Released in August 2008, Minutes A.D. is the result of this period in time, these meetings and this collaboration; both vigil and memorial. Unfortunately, it now forms part one of what has become a sorrowful trilogy of releases, being referred to collectively as A Mourner's Companion.

The Morning People is Volume Two in this series, and serves as my personal memorial for my father, Craig Curtis Varian, who died April 2, 2019.

Volume Three in this series, Deep Hearted, is for the other half of 400 Lonely Things, Jonathan McCall, who passed away on August 18, 2020.

A note on The Morning People, from Craig:

In the late 1960's through the early 1970's, my father wrote the beginnings of a post-apocalyptic hippie-biker science-fiction adventure novel entitled The Morning People, with himself, my mother, and me as the main characters. I read my father's drafts of this novel when I was a very young boy in the mid 1970's. It was my first exposure to the concept of post-apocalyptic fiction, a practically unknown genre at the time.

The day after my father's death in 2019, my stepmother retrieved all of his writings for me, including various drafts, notes and outlines of The Morning People, which was never completed and never published. Included with both the physical and digital audio release of The Morning People is a scanned reproduction of the most recent draft of the first few chapters of this novel, typeset by my mother in 1971, with editorial notes in pen from my father.

While most of the music in this release was recorded in the two years that followed my father's passing, and a few tracks date back to the very early 2000's, this album began with the opening and closing track, recorded at my father's hospital bedside the night before he was to be removed from life support.

400 Lonely Things primarily works in the realm of found sound and manipulated samples, augmented with field recordings, and The Morning People is no exception to this method. The samples comprising this album are from films and recordings that I associate with my father - as our deepest connections were mostly through these mediums - and many samples come from my father's vinyl record collection, which he gave to me some twenty years ago. Notes on audio sources are provided in the supplemental booklet.

While being specific to my father, my hope is that the emotions behind this release are broad enough to provide comfort to others in mourning and to encourage listeners to cherish those they love before we are all lost to time.
